The Pro-Active London Celebrating Sport & Physical Activity Awards were held at Chelsea Football Club on Friday 14th March 2008.

Thanks to everyone who sent in nominations - we had a record response and were delighted with the range and quality of all the nominations.

The winners of the awards are:

1.  Coach of the Year - Denise Holland

As the Performance Netball Coach at Brunel University and Head Coach of the Brunel Hurricanes, most of Denise's time is spent between training players and supporting coaches.  She is also Head Coach of the Regional Talent Programme for England Netball London/South East. Other shortlisted nominees were Sarah Silvester and Jo Crowley

2.  Community Sports Coach of the Year - Miriam Pupalova

 Miriam has played a lead role in bringing the sport of handball to East London.  She has made a significant contribution to the co-ordination of a school coaching and coach education programme. Other shortlisted nominees were Darren Bernatovitch and Pete Ward

3.  Volunteer of the Year - Liz Chowienczyk

As a volunteer at the AHOY Centre, Liz has onabled over 300 people with disabilities to learn to sail.  She has also been instrumental in attracting new volunteers to the centre to assist with various activities. Other shortlisted nominees were Simon Binns and Tom Blake

4.  Step into Sport Community Volunteer of the Year - Ben Jones

Ben has now completed over 200 hours of volunteering enabling him to receive his Step into Sport Gold Award.  He has continued to volunteer, particularly with young people with disabilities and at School Sports Festivals. Other shortlisted nominees were Leah Sasse and Charlie McNamara

5.  Community Exercise Instructor of the Year - Tracey Pereira

Tracey is currently delivering a wide range of fitness classes as well as co-ordinating exercise training sessions, aqua classes and diet and nutrition advice workshops. Other shortlisted nominees were Michael Dotchin and Natalie Power

6.  Physical Activity & Health Project Award - PASS Project from the Camden Society, pictured here receiving the award from Simon Tanner

Delivered by the Camden Society, the PASS Project provides 1 on 1 support to people with mental health and learning disabilities to participate in a more active lifestyle. Other shortlisted nominees were Fit in 5! developed by the Tower Hamlets Local Authority Schools Sports Partnership and Newham Fit Club.

7. Inclusive & Active Ambassador of the Year - Jannette Hynes

Jannette is founder of the PMA Football League.  For the past 6 years she has helped to bridge the gap between hospital and community living through the power of football. Other shortlisted nominees were Dervis Konuralp and Wendy Hoyte.

8.  Club of the Year - Ladywell Gymnastics Club.

Currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, Ladywell Gymnastics has continued to strive to make high-quality gymnastics sessions available to the entire community. Other shortlisted nominees were Survive and Save Swimming Club and London Mets Youth Baseball and Softball Club.

9.  Pro-Active Partner of the Year

Stella Sipple is the Deputy Head of Sport and Recreation at Middlesex University.  She was described by Adrian Ledbury of Pro-Active North as "North London Sports Development personified".  She is heavily involved in a wide range of sports development activities, at a strategic and delivery level, and has been hailed by colleagues for her experience, dedication and commitment and her ability to inspire and enthuse others. 

Pro-Active East - all 10 Pro-Active East CSPANs

All 10 Community Sport and Physical Activity Networks (CSPANs) were recognised for their dedication, commitment and hard work.  Partnership Director Jason presented the award to Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley, City of London, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge and Havering CSPANs.  Each CSPAN will keep the trophy for 36.5 days...

Pro-Active West - London Swimming

London Swimming has been fully supportive of Pro-Active West London since the Partnership began.  Their commitment has seen the emergence of the Aqua Extreme programme for young people.  This is now developed across all 6 boroughs and has led to a successful Community Investment Fund bid that will ensure Aqua Extreme continues over the next 3 years. 

Pro-Active Central - Pro-Active Islington

ProActive Islington has become a model for the development of Community Sport & Physical Activity Networks in London. They were the first to be recognised as a fully functioning CSPAN in Central London, and have also gone to great lengths to share their learning and expertise with other developing CSPANs. More than anything else, the members of this network, and especially those regular members of its core team, have been dedicated, determined and persistent in striving towards the partnership approach, never giving in to indifference or self-interest to ensure that the alliance has flourished.
