The aim of the project was to show people with Visual Impairments and their families that they can participate in sport and exercise and there are opportunities for them to do so in the county on a regular basis. The main outcomes were that the young people got to try a number of impairment specific and mainstream sports.
Two of the Development staff from Northamptonshire Association of the Blind (NAB) were trained to be Goalbal;l coaches which will hoppefully lead to a sustainable club in the county having found that the participants both loved playing the sport and were very good at it. Finally a former Paralympic swimmer from the county who is Deaf and Blind also did an inspirational speech and presentation to the young people and their families to demonstrate how barriers to people with VI's can be broken down in the world of sport that can lead to representing your country and travelling the world while doing so.
The main methods used were positive role models and making all the sport sessions fun and inclusive of everyone regardless of their age or level of their Visual Impairment.
The main lesson learnt was that it's important to link in with third sector organisations such as NAB when trying to identify people with disabilities and impairments that you are trying to engage with and get them participating in more sport and physical activity.
