Wheels for Wellbeing Lambeth Project

Wheels for Wellbeing is a charity which supports disabled people to cycle in London. They provide cycling sessions and cycling advice across Lambeth and recently ran a project in the borough providing qualified instructors to work alongside teachers and support workers from participating SEN schools to enable disabled children to experience cycling. 49 children and young people have participated, using adapted bicycles where appropriate.

A teacher from a primary school said “children have gained confidence, developed motor skills, tried out new experiences, shared and taken turns, persevered in cold wet conditions and learned to ride bikes. Also excellent physical exercise for everyone – staff and children.”

A teacher from a secondary school said “I will certainly be raising the funding issue with our headteacher, as it seems to me that such a valuable initiative should really become a permanent fixture”.

Since this project at least 2 children have attended Wheels for Wellbeing open sessions with their families and some now have their own cycles at home.
